Not Every Decline Means No
Issuers decline for dozens of reasons. Insufficient funds today may be available on Friday. A "do not honor" from one attempt may approve on the next. A closed account will never approve again, and each retry costs you a fee and raises your risk profile.
Most processors hand you a raw response code and leave you to guess. FloPay maintains decline maps for NMI, USAePay, Authorize.net, Stripe, Maverick and FluidPay, with over a thousand response codes classified as hard, soft, fraud, system or other. Every new decline message we see is saved and classified, so the maps keep improving.
That classification drives everything downstream: which payments retry, when they retry, what your dashboard reports, and how much revenue you recover without a single manual call.
How Recovery Works
Classify
The gateway response is mapped to a decline class the moment it arrives. Soft declines are eligible for retry. Hard declines and fraud responses are not.
Retry on Schedule
Installment plans and subscriptions retry soft declines up to three times on a configurable schedule. Move charges to business days if your bank prefers it.
Notify & Escalate
Customers and staff can be notified at each attempt. Exhausted retries and hard declines suspend the plan and surface it for a text-to-pay follow-up.

Raise Approvals Before the Decline Happens
The cheapest decline is the one that never occurs. FloPay sends the correct card-network stored-credential flags on every recurring and merchant-initiated charge, records the network transaction ID from the first payment, and keeps each token pinned to the MID that issued it. Issuers approve properly flagged card-on-file charges at higher rates than unflagged ones.
For one-time payments, text-to-pay and hosted checkout turn phone orders into customer-initiated transactions, which approve more often than keyed MOTO entries. Read more about CIT vs MIT →
How much revenue are declines costing you?

Talk to SalesFrequently Asked Questions
-
Does FloPay retry every declined payment?
No. Only soft declines on installment plans and subscriptions are retried, up to three attempts on a schedule you control. Hard declines and fraud responses suspend the plan so you are not charged retry fees for cards that will never approve.
-
Which gateways have decline maps?
NMI, USAePay, Authorize.net, Stripe, Maverick and FluidPay have detailed maps today. Responses from every gateway are captured and classified as they are seen.
-
Can I see the failure history for a specific plan?
Yes. Each installment plan and subscription shows every attempt, the response, and the classification, so your team can decide the next step.
-
Does this work with payment routing?
Yes. Decline counters per provider feed the routing screen, so you can move share away from a gateway that is under-performing this month.
